Sad but Beautiful
Filed Under Blog | 7 Comments
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past 24 hours, you’ve mostly likely heard all about the Sea World fiasco. It took over the news stations here in Orlando for hours and I admit, I was glued to the tv. Mainly because I have a friend/acquaintance that is one of the female whale trainers and for a few hours I had no idea if she was the woman killed.
Thankfully, she is alright. Sadly, a life was still lost and it turned out to be her friend and fellow trainer, Dawn Brancheau.
Late last night I remembered I have an entire folder of Sea World photos on my desktop from my visit last year. I went through them all and then picked out a few of my favorites to share (though I don’t believe any of these are of Dawn).
Whether or not you agree with having whales in captivity, you have to admit, they are magnificent creatures to behold.

Chicken & Rice Soup (with a kick!)
Filed Under Blog | 7 Comments
This has become my absolute favorite soup recipe. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve made it during these past few months of chilly Florida weather (yes – I know it’s as cold or colder where you are too, but this is FLORIDA. When you’re used to 90+ degree weather and it’s below 35F…it’s definitely freezing!)
One of the best things about this soup is how quick and easy it is – a constant component in my “favorite recipes” list. I also love the bit of spiciness from the red pepper flakes. Give it a try and be happy :)

Ingredients:
(6-8 servings)
2 TBS oil or butter
3 carrots, chopped
2 celery ribs, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/4 – 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
6-8 C chicken broth
1 C frozen corn
2 C shredded cooked chicken
1/3 C uncooked white rice (I use Jasmine)
1. Heat butter/oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Saute carrots, celery, onion, oregano, ginger, salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes for about 5 minutes.
2. Add chicken broth, corn, rice, and chicken and simmer for 25 minutes until rice is cooked. That.Is.It.! :)

The First Five Geek Chic Posters
Filed Under Blog | 9 Comments
Most of the time I think of an idea for only a single painting or a particular photograph, but last week for the first time in my life, I had an idea for an actual “art collection” I wanted to make. I set a deadline for myself to complete the project and I’m happy to say I met it just in time :)
I’ve decided to title these the “Rock Star Scientist Posters”. And I love them.

The five scientists:
Nikola Tesla, born 1856. Croatian physicist and one of the most important contributors to the birth of commercial electricity, inventor of alternating current electric power systems, wireless power transmission, the AC Motor, radio, x-ray, and contributor to the establishment of robotics, remote control, radar, and computer science.
John Bardeen, born 1908. American physicist and inventor of the transistor – a semiconductor device used to amplify and switch electronic signals – which basically makes all of our technology today possible!
Albert Einstein, born 1879. A German born U.S. physicist best known for his theories of special relativity and general relativity.
Neils Bohr, born 1885. A Danish physicist who made fundamental contributions to understanding atomic structure and devised the Bohr model of the atom – the theory that electrons travel in discrete orbits around the atom’s nucleus.
J. Robert Oppenheimer, born 1904. American physicist and scientific director of the Manhattan Project, which led to him being remembered as “The Father of the Atomic Bomb”

And our numbers grow…
Filed Under Blog | 2 Comments
Tuesday night I went to Thai House and met up with our newly formed artist group [7] for the second time.
Two new artists joined us which brings our numbers up to six! FYI: the group isn’t intentionally women-only, it’s just how it’s happened and we’ve agreed to let it grow organically (it is a RAD group of just-ladies so far, though!).
I’ve always done my work and selling online and have nearly zero marketing skills and zero experience in the “art scene” so I sometimes feel a bit lost and overwhelmed as names, locations, and events are tossed around in conversation, but each of these women have been so helpful, welcoming and encouraging as they share their knowledge and resources. I couldn’t help but have a great time and the night flew by faster than I could have imagined.
About an hour after getting home I sort of sat back and realized “Woah…that was a table full of awesome.” and I thought I’d give a little introduction to each of the members since I have a feeling their names will be popping up in future entries :)
New member #1 is Janessa Gursky, Creative Director at Evolve Design Group (http://www.evolvetoday.com. Amazingly energetic, fun, and full of encouragement (and has AWESOME hair).

New member #2 is Brook Pifer (http://www.brookpifer.com and http://blog.brookpifer.com), a celebrity photographer based in New York and Orlando. She’s totally down to earth, has a great sense of humor, and does fantastic voices while telling a story.

Anna McCambridge (http://annamccambridge.com/Anna_McCambridge_Fine_Art.html) is the Visual Fringe Producer and is constantly positive, wonderfully silly, and the very definition of “sweet”.
Amber Mundinger (http://downtownorlando.com/blogs/ambermundinger) is Marketing and Special Events Coordinator at Orlando Downtown Development Board. She couldn’t make it to this meeting but she is very awesome as well and I didn’t want to leave her out, so this is her photo from our meeting last month :)

Tisse Mallon (http://www.tisseart.com) is a photographer and the mastermind genius that put this group together. She’s friendly, funny, always excited about making things happen, and the most fabulously organized person I have ever met.

So watch out Orlando, and watch out WORLD! [7] is on the move and big things will happen.
P.S. I joined the masses. Ask me anything – http://www.formspring.me/megankatauskas
